Astronomy is a scientific field that, through both the allure of the sky and popular culture, enjoys significant penetration into the public and especially the young.
This fact along with the interdisciplinary character of the field, makes astronomy an ideal avenue for teaching basic scientific principles in a context that is both relevant to the subject and interesting to the learners. Yet, there lies a significant challenge: the dissemination of sometimes highly specialized scientific knowledge to an audience without extended or even uniform scientific background, of a wide age range and scattered over a region considerably larger than a university campus.
This paper presents the educational activities at the Thrace Amateur Astronomy Club (TAAC, http://www.astrothraki.gr) that aim to disseminate the basics of astronomy and related physics to the public and especially the young.
The dedicated amateur astronomers of the club, with the significant amount of astronomical knowledge that they amass through the pursuit of their passion, represent an alternative venue for astronomy’s outreach to the general public. Apart from conventional practices, TAAC is currently in the process of employing emerging technologies of Web 2.0 (wikis, interactive virtual online environments, etc.) and contemporary learner-centered educational approaches (such as problem based learning) in order to create self-directed experiential educational episodes in the field, in the classroom and on the internet.

Ο Σύλλογος Ερασιτεχνικής Αστρονομίας Θράκης (ΣΕΑΘ) με την θερμή υποστήριξη της Διευρυμένης Νομαρχιακής Αυτοδιοίκησης Ροδόπης – Έβρου κατασκεύασε 2 αφίσες που περιλαμβάνουν :

Αστροφωτογραφίες μελών ΣΕΑΘ 2004-2007

Οι αφίσες αυτές προωθούνται σε γυμνάσια, Λύκεια  άλλους εποπτευόμενους τοπικούς φορείς, των Νομών Έβρου - Ροδόπης.

Σκοπός των αφισών είναι να :
· δημιουργήσουν ένα μόνιμο ερέθισμα στους μαθητές, να ασχοληθούν με την αστρονομία και όχι μόνο, αφού στην ουσία εμπλέκονται πάρα πολλές επιστήμες μαζί.
· σχεδιασθούν μελλοντικές συνεργασίες με τα σχολεία, πάντα με την συνεργασία της εκπαιδευτικής κοινότητας της περιοχής δράσης μας και όσων φορέων το επιθυμούν, στα πλαίσια των δυνατοτήτων του ΣΕΑΘ.

We have a long tradition in Space and Solar System outreach at the University of Athens (Space Group). We have contributed with many popular science articles in encyclopaedias (a total of some 200000 words), magazines and newspapers, public lectures around Greece and radio and TV programmes.
We contribute in exhibitions for the public on many occasions (e.g. The British Exploration of the Planets, an exhibition organized by the British Council, at Eugenides Foundation and The Planetarium, where I prepared some 15 posters).
We are preparing an outreach site of Astrophysics with sections for the planets, the exploration of the solar system and solar terrestrial relations. I am preparing several posters for the planets. We organize with the Hellenic Physical Union a series of Astrophysics Lectures at the University of Athens.
Together with the Hellenic Physical Union we are planning to produce a theatrical play and CD or DVD concerning the planets. We have excellent collaboration with the amateur astronomers allover Greece and Cyprus.
We organize, together with Physics or mathematics teachers in high schools several events related to astronomical observations (e.g. Venus transit, solar eclipe, astronomy nights).
We also organize popular science programmes in TV channels. I brief we consider Astronomy a “Great Attractor” of pupil and the general public to science and we use it on every occasion for the benefit of the pupil and science.
